On a trip to the Gold Coast in Australia a few years ago, I had the most amazing drink that tasted like my favorite chai latte but it was golden in color. When I asked the barista about it, she told me it was a Turmeric Latte or Golden Milk Latte.

I loved it so much, I asked her about the ingredients and set off to create my own version that anyone could make. In addition, I wanted to create a bulk golden latte mix that could be made ahead of time.

What is a Golden Turmeric Latte?

A turmeric latte (also known as golden milk) is a caffeine-free drink made with turmericcinnamongingerhoney and milk.  It’s referred to as golden milk due to the golden color of turmeric. It tastes similar to a chai latte but without the caffeine. It’s made similar to a latte with steamed milk but instead of using coffee, black tea or a chai tea mix, you use turmeric and other spices.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is native to Southeast Asia, and used primarily in Indian cuisine and commonly found in curry powder. It’s a root similar to ginger. The active ingredient in turmeric is a compound called curcumin, which has shown to be a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits. Those who are dealing with inflammation may benefit from adding turmeric to their diet.

Curcumin on its own isn’t bioavailable, which means it isn’t well absorbed into the body. But combining turmeric with black pepper helps this. There’s a compound in black pepper called piperine that helps to increase the bioavailability of turmeric by about 2000%. So this recipe will include a little black pepper to add both spice and help to get all the benefits of turmeric.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Delicious drink: This hot golden milk features warming spices and frothed milk to create a warm beverage that’s comforting to drink.
  • Caffeine free: Enjoy a comforting drink without the caffeine. It’s great for coffee drinks or tea drinks looking to cut back on caffeine but still enjoy a warm drink. Or make it iced and enjoy it like your favorite coffee shop latte.
  • Make it in bulk: Combine the spices together (full recipe below) to make a bulk mix. Use 2 tablespoons along with your milk and sweetener of choice (I prefer honey or maple syrup).
  • Use fresh or ground spices: This golden milk recipe can be customized with either fresh or dry spices.

Ingredients

This recipe is made with just a handful of ingredients that you may already have in your pantry.

  • Ground turmeric (fresh turmeric root can be used too)
  • Ground ginger (fresh ginger root can be used too)
  • Ground cinnamon or cinnamon stick
  • Black pepper
  • Choice of sweetener like raw honey or maple syrup
  • Choice of milk like regular milk or plant-based milk

How to Make This Recipe

  • Add turmeric, ginger, black pepper and milk to a small saucepan.
  • Cook on low-medium heat and gently whisk to mix the spices with the milk. Don’t boil. Heat it to the temperature you like to drink.
  • Turn off the heat. Add the sweetener, and mix well.
  • Pour into mugs and use a frother if you like to create more foam.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon to garnish.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Milk: Use non-dairy milk instead of regular milk. Opt for unsweetened and full fat milk. Personally, I find full-fat coconut milk to be perfect for this recipe. Unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk, soy milk, and oat milk work well too.
  • Spices: Use 1 tablespoon of fresh turmeric instead of 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric, 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger instead of 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger, or 1 cinnamon stick instead of 1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon. I personally find ground spices easier to work with especially when making the bulk golden milk recipe mix. Fresh turmeric can especially be messy and stain both hands and surfaces like cutting boards and countertops, so just take precautions when using it.
  • Vanilla extract: You could omit if you prefer. I find it adds a rich vanilla flavor to this recipe.
  • Sweetener: Raw honey and maple syrup work best for this recipe, but you could omit or use your favorite natural sweeteners like sugar, stevia, etc.
  • Cooking: Use an immersion blender instead of a whisk to mix the spices into the milk. Sometimes the spices can sit at the bottom of the mug if it hasn’t been mixed well, and an immersion blender can help with that.
  • Make it a cold drink: Make an iced turmeric latte instead. Make the recipe according the directions and let cool for a couple of minutes. Add a tall glass with ice and enjoy!

How to Make a Bulk Instant Turmeric Latte Mix

This is a make-ahead mix for 24 servings. Just add the sweetener when you make a single serving.

  • 1 1/2 cups coconut milk powder
  • 4 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean powder (optional)

Directions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and puree for about 5-10 seconds. This will get rid of any lumps in the mix.
  • Store in an airtight glass jar. Makes about 20-24 servings.
  • When ready to use, scoop out 2 tbsp of the mix into a mug. Add 8-10 oz of hot water. Add natural sweetener of choice (raw honey, stevia, date sugar, etc.). 1-2 tsp per 8 oz mug is just about the right sweetness. Use an electric milk frother to get a latte consistency.

You could omit the coconut milk powder, and just mix the dry spices. Use 8-10 oz of any type of milk (heated) along with 2 tablespoons of the dry mix and your favorite sweetener. Use a frother or immersion blender to mix well.

  1. Made this this morning with cow’s milk because that’s all I had and it was very calming and made me so sleepy that I should have waited to make it until this evening :D. I’ll definitely make it again. Thanks for the recipe!

  2. Beautiful recipe. The perfect mix. I used Golden Syrup to make it vegan, and soy milk because that’s all I had on hand. I’ll never need to try another now because this was perfect. Accidentally doubled the ginger one time and it was still so good.
