I love to cook Chinese food, but one thing is missing from my pantry: regular soy sauce. I’ve long given up on conventional soy sauce and been looking for a Soy Sauce Substitute, because my family is gluten free and soy free, and I now know why soy is bad for my health.
>Why Make Your Own Soy Sauce Substitute
The store-bought gluten-free soy sauce can get expensive. On Amazon, it’s about $12 for a 8 oz. bottle. At my local health food store, it’s about $6.85 for the same bottle.>
That’s why I love having this Soy Sauce Substitute recipe on hand in case I need an alternative with basic ingredients I already have in my pantry. It’s really easy to make and a great way to use up leftover bone broth.>
Easy-to-Make Soy Sauce
There are a few ingredients, but you may already have most of them in your pantry! Just 1 min prep and 10 mins to cook, then you have a batch of delicious soy sauce substitute!>
How To Make This Soy Sauce Substitute – Step By Step
-
In a small saucepan, add all ingredients except salt and sesame oil.
-
Bring ingredients to a boil and simmer on medium heat for about 10 minutes.
-
Turn off heat, add in salt and sesame oil and stir until well mixed.
-
Let cool and store in an airtight container for up to a week or freeze a portion of it to use for later.
Top Tips for This Soy Sauce Substitute
- Use as a substitute for soy sauce, Coconut Aminos or Worcestershire sauce. This sauce also makes a great “stir-fry” sauce when thickened with a little arrowroot powder.
- Store the sauce tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to one week. Shake before using. Or freeze a portion for later use.
- You can hold off on the salt until the end, then add if you feel you need it.
- You can add some sesame oil or leave it out – it does add another lovely layer though.

This seems to me to be more of a stir=fry sauce.
I added a little fish sauce and chili paste.
It was a delicious. healthy alternative to marketed brands.
Big hug for sharing.
