Often store-bought Keto bagels or gluten-free bagels have a unique texture that is not as satisfying as their less healthy alternative. However, thanks to the delicious combination of almond flour, cream cheese, and mozzarella it’s hard to believe these bagels are keto-friendly as they have the same chewy bagel quality just like the real deal.

Why Almond Flour

Almond flour is a grain-free, low-carb flour that’s a great substitute for wheat flour in baking and cooking. It’s ideal for a keto diet as it is packed with nutrients and has a slightly sweeter taste. However, unlike traditional wheat flour, it has an extremely low glycemic index which helps reduce sugar levels in the blood. Almond flour is also rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants.

Why Mozzarella Dough

Also known as Fathead dough, this bagel dough is gluten-free, low carb, and Keto-friendly, made with mozzarella, cream cheese, egg, and any low carb flour. When mozzarella is combined with almond flour, the chewy texture is identical to traditional bagel dough, making for a tastier treat that’s also gluten-free.

How to Make Keto Onion Bagels

  1. Preheat oven to 375F and prepare a sheet pan or baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Combine the almond flour, baking powder, and onion powder and mix well.

3. Add mozzarella and cream cheese to the bowl and microwave in 45-second increments until the cheese is completed melted and forms a ball of dough. It should go through 2 cycles.

4. Add the egg to the bowl and vigorously mix (or use your hands) to ensure the egg is fully incorporated into your dough.

5. Divide the dough into four portions. Roll each portion into a ball and gently push a finger through the center to make a nickel-sized hole. Place on parchment paper and repeat on the other three bagels. Make sure the bagels are two inches apart.

6. Use the olive oil and brush the bagels on top and top with onion flakes.

7. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until a nice golden brown forms on top.

8. Let cool for 10-15 minutes and then enjoy!

Ways to Serve These Low Carb Onion Bagels

  • Toast and top with mashed avocado and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Enjoy with cream cheese and sliced tomato
  • Slice in half and use these keto onion bagels as mini pizza bases
  • Enjoy with your favorite sandwich fixings like deli meat, cheese, lettuce, and sliced tomatoes for a delicious low-carb sandwich.

How To Store

This recipe makes 4 bagels but if you’d prefer to make ahead and store, simply double the ingredients. These low-carb bagels are made without preservatives which means they won’t last as long as ordinary bagels.

Store in an airtight container and then they can either be stored in the refrigerator or pantry for up to 3 days. Alternatively, you could store them in a zip lock bag and freeze.

Top Tips For This Keto Low Carb Onion Bagel Recipe

  • Make sure to keep the bagels at least 2 inches apart on the baking sheet otherwise they will cook into each other.
  • You can make the dough ahead of time then tightly wrap it in cling film and store it in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • You can use this fathead dough as a low carb pizza base also
  • Avoid handling the dough if your hands or your home is very hot. This will make the dough too sticky. If you are struggling with sticky dough, chill in the fridge for 30 minutes or add a little oil to your hands before handling.

  4. Hi Tracey,

I need to be lactose free as well as gluten free. Would this recipe work with plant based cheeses? I’d love to try this, it looks so good!

    Thank you,
    Sharon

    1. Hi Sharon, I haven’t tried it with plant based cheese. I don’t know if it will create the consistency of a dough like dairy cheese will. But if you try it please let me know.
