When searching for snacks that are both gluten-free and low carb, the options can become a little repetitive. That’s why these Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers stand out as they tick many boxes of the perfect appetizer – easy, delicious, and memorable. Unlike restaurant-style poppers, these jalapeño poppers are baked instead of fried and wrapped in bacon instead of breadcrumbs.

They deliver the perfect combination of salt and spice with the satisfying textures of creamy and crunch. I should warn in advance, after making these once, friends and family will demand them for every gathering. Thankfully, after a little prep of slicing and stuffing, they take just 15 minutes to bake.

How to Make Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers Step by Step

  • Cut your jalapeños in half and clean out the seeds and ribs.

Filling Variations

  • Lemon, Mint & Cucumber: For a refreshing twist add a squeeze of lemon, chopped mint leaves and some cubed cucumber to your cream cheese filling.
  • Baked Feta, Cilantro & Onion: For a low fat alternative feta, cilantro and onion will ensure a flavorful filling.
  • Goats Cheese: Works well with jalapeno poppers because the creaminess of goats cheese balances well with the spicy jalapeno.
  • Mushroom: Also a flavor that counteracts well with the zing of jalapeno. Mince the mushrooms before combining with cream cheese, shredded cheese, and garlic powder and then bake as per instructions.

Storage

Make Ahead: A further reason these Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers are the perfect party appetizer is that they can easily be made in advance. For best results make no longer than 2 days in advance then add the uncooked poppers to a baking sheet, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate. Bake as per instructions just before serving. If you decide to bake the poppers beforehand and reheat, they won’t be as crispy but are still delicious.

Freezing: Prepare the poppers as per instruction but do not bake. While on the baking sheet, freeze the poppers for 1 hour. Then, transfer them to an airtight container that is freezer safe and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. There is no need to thaw you can bake them from frozen but add an extra 10 minutes.

Can I Make These in The Air Fryer?

Yes, these Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers work great in the air fryer. Simply follow the steps as usual, but instead of baking add to your air fryer basket leaving about an inch around each popper. Then, air fry at 390 degrees for approximately 10 minutes, or just until the bacon is at your desired level of crispiness.

Are These Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers Spicy?

This will depend on your taste buds and how much heat you can handle. Jalapeños can be tricky as some are hotter than others and you won’t know if you’ve got a particularly hot batch until you bite into them.

However, usually, the hottest part of a jalapeño is the seeds. This is why it’s important to scrape the membranes before adding your filling. If you want to take the spice up a notch, you could leave a few seeds. If you are scared of spice, take your time during this step.

How Can I Make These Dairy-Free?

This recipe is very easy to customize if you’re dairy-free or simply want to add your own twist. Instead of cream cheese, homemade guacamole also works well due to its creamy consistency. You could also stuff the jalapenos with marinara sauce or salsa.

Are These Poppers Keto?

Yes, they are low carb and Keto friendly.

Can I Make These Paleo?

A creamy cashew filling is a great way to make these jalapeno poppers suitable for a paleo diet. After soaking for 4 hours, place cashew nuts, lemon juice, garlic powder, and onion powder in a blender and blend until smooth. Use this creamy mixture to replace your cream cheese filling and continue the steps as normal.

Top Tips

  • Wear gloves or remember to wash hands thoroughly when working with Jalapeños.
  • Toothpicks can help keep your poppers together and avoid them falling apart in the oven.
  • Don’t use thick bacon as this can make your poppers chewy and takes longer to cook. Thinner bacon will make your poppers crispy.
  • For the final 2-3 minutes set your oven to broil for extra crispy poppers.
  • Leave on the stem as it provides something to hold on to when picking up these jalapeno poppers.

  1. Yum! This was so delicious. We like keeping it in the oven just a little longer to get the bacon particularly crispy!
