I love the fall for the simple reason that’s it’s apple harvest time. We love to go picking for apples in nearby orchards in Julian, California with the most delicious, organic apples. We fill our bags with both red and green apples and enjoy our bounty all month long. It seems like the right time to explore some delicious Gluten Free Apple recipes!
I wanted to dedicate an entire blog post to all the wonderful REAL FOOD (no artificial colors, preservatives or processed food) apple recipes from my favorite bloggers. Here you’ll find everything from snacks and appetizers to main meals and drinks featuring apples.
Types of Apples for Gluten Free Apple Recipes
Apples come in many different flavor varieties, including those that are sweeter than they are tart. A sweeter apple naturally has higher sugars, or Brix, levels. Interestingly, sweet apples can also be acidic, but the sugar in the fruit overpowers tartness, resulting in a sweeter eating experience.
If you think about the apples that you can find frequently at a grocery store, the top sweet apple is Fuji. The sugar levels in a Fuji apple range from 15-18 on average (remember, an apple is mostly made up of water). Other apple varieties that are on the sweet side are: Honeycrisp apples, Ambrosia apples, Gala apples, and Golden Delicious apples, and Red Delicious apples.
Sweet apples are a great standalone snack, and healthy dessert. A sweet apple variety is also great for balancing with salty and savory foods, which is why you’ll often see sweet apples paired with sharp cheeses on appetizer platters.
Using Organic Apples in These Gluten Free Apple Recipes
Conventional apples have been found to harbor potential foodborne pathogens, making them less healthy for the consumer, host plant, and environment than organic apples. Organic apples were host to a significantly greater variety of “good” bacteria such as Lactobacillus, a probiotic with human health benefits.
So buying organic apples will reduce your exposure to potential pesticide residues, since the USDA restricts all chemical pesticides. If you choose conventional, rinse your apples or remove the peel.

How Long Do Apples Last?
Loose apples will last 6-8 weeks if refrigerated. If they are on the counter, they ripen 10 times faster because the enzymes are much more active at room temperature, so they will keep for a week or two maximum. So bear this mind in stocking up for your Gluten Free Apple Recipes.

- Because apples taste sweet and tart, and because the intensity of sweetness and tartness varies by apple type, a cook can benefit from getting to know the apple varieties. The trick to cooking with them is trying new varieties and mixing and matching their flavors
- If you prefer a tang to your apple, you may want to bake pies with both the sweet Golden Delicious and the more sour Granny Smith, a common pie paring.
- Drying apples removes the moisture from the apple, leaving it with a concentrated flavor. Dried apples make a sweet nutritious gluten free apple treat and are easy to store.
- There are so many things you can do with leftover apple peels. Add them to your compost or toss them into a smoothie for extra fiber. You can even use apple peels to clean aluminum cookware. The acid in the peel removes stains and discoloration from aluminum pots and pans. Fill the pan with water, add the peels, and simmer for about 30 minutes. Use a high-acid apple like Granny Smith or Pink Lady apples for best results.
