This led me to think of ways to incorporate my favorite scent into daily life. Thanks to this Pumpkin Spice Foaming Hand Soap I can make my favorite season last all year round.

Not only does it smell beautiful, but with this DIY foaming hand wash you can clean and moisturize your hands naturally without harsh chemicals. Plus, the essential oils have anti-bacterial properties for an added germ-fighting boost.

Homemade Hand Soap vs. Store Bought

After the events of recent years, we are all too familiar with the effect hand soap can have on our hands when washing them several times a day. Perhaps you’ve noticed rough skin? Dryness? Itchiness?

These are all common signs of irritation that can occur due to the harsh chemicals present in store bought hand soap. Before I share my DIY pumpkin spice foaming hand wash tutorial, it’s important to understand the chemicals your skin is battling against every time you run them under the tap.

Here are some of the most common ingredients in traditional hand wash:

  • Sulfates—A common ingredient in soap-based products. Sulfates are harsh on both your hair and skin and are renowned for causing irritation, particularly for those with sensitive skin.
  • Parabens— You’ve likely heard me mention these before. They’re one of the many reasons I made the switch to non-toxic makeup. As a preservative, they prevent the growth of bacteria and give beauty and skincare products a longer shelf life. However, they’re also known to be endocrine disruptors this means they can cause hormonal imbalance and infertility.
  • Fragrance— Legally, companies do not need to disclose what exact fragrance their hand soap contains. This means it could be packed with hundreds of harsh chemicals that you’re unknowingly scrubbing into your skin. This DIY foaming hand wash is fragranced naturally using essential oils, for a pumpkin spice scent that’s kind to skin.

The good news is, thanks to my homemade hand soap alternative, you can avoid these toxic ingredients AND save money. At a time when handwashing is even more essential to our health and well-being than ever, it is important you consider the ingredients you’re applying and absorbing into your skin and your family’s skin.

By switching to this DIY pumpkin foaming hand soap, you can effectively free your hands from dirt and germs using a product that’s gentle and safe for all ages.

About the Ingredients

  • liquid castile soap – This castile soap is cheap, free of harsh chemicals and easy to source. It is a coconut-based soap that is non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin. Not only will it clean your skin naturally, but it is gentle enough to even use on babies. Just make sure to use unscented to maximize the pumpkin spice scent.
  • aloe vera gel – There’s a reason aloe vera gel is a go–to ingredient for sunburn relief. Known for it’s ability to reduce inflammation, it is a natural moisturizer that can soothe irritation and fight bacteria. It is also used in this DIY foaming hand soap recipe to help disperse essential oils.
  • witch hazel – While witch hazel helps to keep the water in this hand soap purified, it also helps to fight bacteria from the skin’s surface.
  • Orange essential oil – Alongside contributing to our favorite fall scent, orange essential oil is renowned for fighting inflammation and keeping our skin fresh.
  • Cinnamon essential oil – As well as providing a comforting, spicy scent, cinnamon essential oil is rich in anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties – perfect for a DIY foaming hand soap.

  1. In a soap dispensing bottle, add water, castile soap and aloe vera gel using a funnel.

  3. Replace the lid securely and shake vigorously for a few seconds.
  4. To use, wet hands and add a pump of soap. Massage in to your skin to clean your hands then rinse well.

Variations

  • Fall Blends – I’ve kept this pumpkin spice hand soap simple with just two essential oils but feel free to add clove, ginger or nutmeg essential oils. If you’re looking for more fall essential oil blends Check out my 10 Fall Air Freshener blends or 10 DIY Fall Diffuser Blends for inspiration.
  • Essential Oils – It is so easy to customize this DIY foaming hand wash by mixing up the essential oils. I used lemongrass essential oil in this homemade hand soap as I love how refreshed and clean it makes my hands feel. Lavender, Thieves, lemon or Tea Tree are all amazing essential oils with skin loving benefits that would also work well in a homemade hand wash.
  • Honey – You could also add honey to this recipe. I love using honey in skincare such as my DIY honey face masks because it’s super moisturizing and also a great antibacterial agent so it will add extra germ-fighting power.
  • Sweet almond oil – Sweet almond oil is one of my favorite carrier oils for clear skin. It would make a great addition to this DIY foaming hand soap thanks to the fatty acids that help keep skin soft and moisturized. It is also super lightweight and absorbs easily so your hands won’t feel oil after using the hand wash.

Top Tips for This DIY Pumpkin Spice Foaming Hand Soap

  • This DIY Pumpkin Spice Foaming Hand Soap will keep for around one month. Just make sure to use witch hazel as this helps keep the water sanitized.
  • I’ve found a 10 oz soap container is the ideal size. You can can even reuse a foaming hand soap bottle you already have from the store.
  • While I prefer a foaming hand soap container, you can also use an ordinary hand soap bottle. The recipe won’t need to change.
  • I’d recommend giving your soap dispenser a shake every now and then. This will avoid the ingredients separating and maximize effectiveness.
