Food lies. They’re rampant in the food industry, and designed to misinform and confuse consumers to buy foods that are low-quality and stripped of any health benefits. No doubt these lies are created to make top food manufacturers more money, while serving Americans foods that are often banned in other countries.
These food facts are shocking – not only tough to swallow – but can cause serious health problems for consumers every year.
4 Frightening Facts Food Manufacturers Don’t Want You To Know
Like most kids, my boys love honey. We make homemade hot cocoa with it and make our favorite Paleo brownies using just honey as our sweetener. And honey is really food for you right? Yes, but the truth is only unpasteurized, raw honey is safe to eat… anything else is just artificial filler.
What makes honey so healthy is the presence of bee pollen which is packed with important proteins in the form of amino acids. Unfortunately, the majority of honey sold in America is filtered of any bee pollen and pumped with corn syrup and artificial sweeteners in its place.
If it’s not organic, the chicken you eat could contain beef and/or pork products. The method known as “plumping” has been a standard practice in the chicken industry since the 1970s. It is explained as adding juices (probably from other animals) to chicken that would otherwise be too lean and chewy to eat.
The result is meat that contains nearly four times the amount of sodium and was once considered inedible. Sound tasty to you?
Me neither. That’s why I opt for pasture-raised, organic chicken instead. This means chickens are allowed to roam on a pasture and eat an omnivore’s diet: bugs, worms, grass and other plants.
You see, even organic or naturally raised chickens are given a vegetarian diet filled with corn, soy and other fillers. This diet is not what chicken would actually eat if allowed roam wild. Chickens are omnivores, not herbivores (or vegetarians).
3. Red Meat
Brace yourself for this factoid. Did you know meat scraps can be glued together to resemble one cut of an animal? That’s right, I said glue. Transglutaminase is a substance used mostly in beef or pork products to meld off cuts together to be sold as prime and expensive cuts.
Even more appetizing is the process of treating red meats to carbon monoxide gas injections to make otherwise grey meat appear red in color and therefore fresher. It’s no secret that carbon monoxide can be deadly in large doses.
Opt for organic, grass-fed meat instead. Be careful to make sure that grass-fed meat is given an organic diet – as grass-fed cows can still be given GMO alfalfa grass. Tricky, tricky.
The very rare times I cook salmon, I always choose wild caught and organic. Aside from the dangers of excessive mercury, a large portion of the salmon sold in stores has been dyed to appear healthy and appetizing.
The diet of aquarium pellets that farmed fish is fed leaves them malnourished and as a result their flesh looks dull and grey. Nothing a little food coloring can’t fix! The pellets are infused with a chemical coloring agent not far off from the paint you use to decorate your walls. Not a pretty picture I’d say.
