Today, my kids went to Kauai Kunana Dairy Farm. I had read so many great reviews, and wanted to check it out for myself. I’ve always thought that my 4-year-old son should live on a farm because he’s as wild as the farm animals, so it was the perfect environment for him.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about it. The tour was done by a second generation farmer who both worked on the farm, and was a walking encyclopedia about all the plants and animals on the farm. It started with the best oatmeal cookies I’ve ever had, along with banana bread and lemonade. My kids got thirds of everything.
We learned about the goats and the process of milking them and making cheese. My sons got to feed the mama goats and play with the baby goats. They were in absolute heaven.
We also learned about and got to sample different fruits and vegetables on the farm, including avocados, oranges, grapefruit, and apple bananas – as well as sample honey and cheese. We also learned about noni and how it’s used to increase energy and boost the immune system.
I’m hoping it will be an experience my kids won’t forget. I really wanted them to experience farm life – and to know where food comes from. Plus, I wanted them to see live chickens and goats – to interact with them and to have empathy for everything they do for us – as well as the delicious eggs, milk, and cheese they provide.
The tour was $35 for adults, free for kids under 12. It was 2.5 hours long – a bit long for my kids, but they were so accommodating. While my husband and I followed Ryan (one of the farmers) to learn about the fruit trees, his wife Sarah took my kids on an extra long visit with the goats. And they were so patient with my rambunctious boys.
While I loved farm life, I don’t think I’ll be giving up my day job just yet. I could see the workers on the farm and the back-breaking work they do. I have the utmost appreciation for what they do. So my son’s days of running around with farm animals will have to be limited to farm tours like today.
But it does make me want to do more with my food, such as buy more at farmers’ markets, get involved with my local community-supported agriculture (CSA), and look for more ways to avoid genetically-modified (GMO) foods. I really love the idea of getting more involved with local farmers to know more about my food and where it comes from. Stonyfield has some cool food facts at Know Your Food.
I know for many families it’s hard to even get kids to eat healthy sometimes, let alone eat organic food or produce from CSAs. So what are your food priorities in 2012? Cutting out soda? Eating more vegetables?
