My Almost-Famous 50 Shades of Grey Moment

As most of you know, I’m obsessed with Fifty Shades of Grey. I loved the book series so much that I’ve blogged about it numerous times, re-read the trilogy more times than I’d like to admit, and pretty much find every opportunity to talk about it with family, friends, other moms and complete strangers. I mean, I’ve bonded with women I don’t even know about how much I love the series and how it’s helped, uh, give a little spark in the bedroom.

So I was beyond excited when I was contacted by a new, national television show to talk about 50 Shades of Grey. I talked to one of the show’s producers about my take on the EL James’ trilogy – like why I enjoyed it, how it helped my marriage, and what’s the appeal to Christian Grey. She loved it and invited me to submit a video with my husband to talk about it – with the very likely possibility that we’d be on the show with EL James.

All-expense paid trip to New York? Oh yeah!

Talk about my favorite book series? Pul-ease. I could do that in my sleep.

Hob-nob with the television host and possibly EL James herself? Oh my, I just may crap my pants with excitement.

Get my husband to do a video and come with me to New York? Wait, now there’s a problem.

My husband just had back surgery last month and is still recovering. I thought surely he’d be able to do a quick video for the show. But he just wasn’t up to it. I totally understood – he’s recovering and had to give up beer, Monster energy drinks, sugar and carbs due to newfound-food allergies. And honestly, he wouldn’t have been able to tolerate sitting down for 5-6 hours for a flight to New York.

But still I was depressed. I knew he couldn’t do it but kept hoping by some Fifty Shades miracle that he would feel good enough to do it. So I moped all week – and yes, I know it sounds trivial but I did get a little teary eyed. Of course, his health comes first but a part of me wanted this so bad. It would have been a great opportunity for me.

I turned down the offer to the producer. I tried to pitch a story angle with just me or me and a girlfriend, but the producer really wanted a married couple. She graciously offered me tickets to the show but I’d still need to pay my own flight, which just isn’t possible for me right now.

So I’ll be tuning into the show and hope that the couple they do find works out. I’m tempted to do video (it would be my first vlog) post to answer the same questions the producer asked.

And Ms. EL James? We’ll just have to meet another day.
