Did you know that conventional mouthwashes are loaded with toxic chemicals and harsh ingredients? Think about the last time you had a swish of a popular mouthwash like Listerine. It’s so strong – it’s nearly painful to gargle for more than a few seconds. Why?
Check out the label. There’s some powerful ingredients in Listerine, including:
Eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, thymol, sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, poloxamer, ethanol alcohol, caramel color and water.
These are milder toxins, but still toxins nonetheless – mostly organ system toxicity. Plus, think about the artificial colors and preservatives used.
And there are other more concerning mouthwash products. Here’s the label for ACT Mouthwash – I remember using this as a kid.
I’m most concerned about propylene glycol (found in anti-freeze), sodium fluoride (synthetic fluoride that may be a carcinogen – find out why you should avoid fluoride), and sodium saccharin (the salt form of saccharin, an artificial sweetener, that may be a carcinogen).
Is this what you want to swish in your mouth? Even though you’re not drinking it, the contact alone still exposes you to these harsh products.
Looking for a natural alternative? Here’s a recipe that’s so simple, even kids can do it – if they have the ability to gargle and swish comfortably. I make this DIY Mouthwash Recipe in small quantities to keep it fresh, and it’s so easy just to make another batch.
- Cinnamon essential oil (where to buy)
- Peppermint essential oil (where to buy)
- 1/2 cup distilled or filtered water
- In a small glass cup, add water, 2 drop Cinnamon and 2 drop of Peppermint.
- Swish for 20 seconds or so, and then spit out. You’re teeth, gums and mouth will feel refreshed afterwards.
