I love May. 1) It’s my birthday month. 2) It’s the month with Mother’s Day. 3) It’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.


Not that I need a month to celebrate my heritage but just like my birthday and Mother’s Day rolled up together – I feel like Asian Pacific American Heritage Month honors both my Chinese ancestry and my Hawaiian upbringing.

So for the entire month, I’ll share some of my favorite recipes, books, stories, celebrations and holidays, and more about my heritage.

To kick it off, I just love that Barack Obama officially made May American Pacific American Heritage Month. I remember when it was election time everyone was elated about the prospect of the first African-American president. Not me, I was stoked that someone from Hawaii was going to be president. Someone who eats musubi (like spam sushi), who eats shaved ice and calls it that (damn you, snow cones), who loves the ocean, and even gave his daughter a Hawaiian name.

Obama went to Punahou, an elite private school for Hawaii (and I understand for the rest of US – it’s like Harvard for high school). I went to a tiny private school down the street from Punahou, so it’s like we were backyard cousins – of course he graduated about 15 years ahead of me. Still, it feels like a little piece of home in The White House.

  2. You had me at “Matsumoto’s Shave Ice”. Everything else is a blur. lol No really, I’m proud that our President was born and raised in Hawaii too. He swam in the same ocean we did, ate manapua and fried noodles and MALASADAS!!! And really, this all just turning into a comment about food. lol

    • Thanks for stopping by, Kristi. We’re from Hawaii – everything is about food. Please tell me: was it hard to adjust to parties in the mainland? Maybe it’s different in Missouri, but I still get a little disappointed when I got to a party in Cali. I’m like where’s the poke? Sushi? And the array of every meat imaginable?
