I’m beyond excited. The new Whole Foods in Del Mar opens on Wednesday, Feb. 27. It will be the closest Whole Foods to my house. Trust me, I’ve mapped the miles. Whole Foods is my go-to grocery store for local produce as well as my favorite bakery, especially for dye-free, all natural birthday cake for my kids.
I had an opportunity to visit the new Whole Foods in Del Mar tonight. It was amazing. It’s easily the most beautiful grocery store I’ve ever seen. The interior design of the store was gorgeous – inspired by local elements such as the Torrey Pine tree cones in the design of the wall tiles throughout the store.
It was modern and hip – yet organized with details to help shoppers with various food preferences, allergies, etc. For instance, the aisles are lined with products that make it easy to identify foods that are GMO free, local, gluten free, vegan, sustainable, etc. I especially loved seeing local wines and cheese. The meat department carries a full line of locally sourced, 100% grass-fed beef, chicken and turkey – all clearly marked for customers.
All the fish offered at Whole Foods is sustainable and can be cut to your preference – head or no head, bone in or out, etc. Of course, if my mom shopped here she’d insist on keeping the head on for good luck. And I’m sure someone would be vying for the eyeballs.
And for those of you who think Whole Foods is uber expensive, there are definitely bargains you can find throughout the store – including $2.99 for a bottle of wine, ready-to-eat meals and much more.
One of my favorite things about this Whole Foods is The Trifecta Tavern. It’s a bar in Whole Foods… genius! So while you shop, you can stop by for a drink – either order direct from the bar or buy in the store and the bar will open it for you, no corkage fee. The Trifecta Tavern will also offer an extensive food menu with wine and a rotating selection of craft beers on tap. I can easily see my husband hanging out here while I take my time to shop in the store.
In addition to the tavern, there’s a salad bar, sandwich bar (using nearly all locally sourced San Diego ingredients) and bakery for grab-and-go meals.
The Whole Foods in Del Mar opens Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 9 am, and there’s plenty of parking in the back. Come check it out for yourself.

Wow! That looks great! I have never been in a whole food store I don’t think. Do they have them in Canada too? Don’t think I have seen one.

Thanks for visiting. I know – I should stop complaining that I have to drive 20 min. I’m spoiled because there’s a Trader Joe’s literally around the corner from my house.
Hey, I went to Whole Foods today, too, but mine didn’t have a Tavern!

Ha ha, keep your eyes peeled for a new Whole Foods. I bet it’s a new concept they’re testing out. I will definitely be back.
I love their logo (the first photo)!! Now, if only it has a daycare (or something of the like) for the kiddos, it would be perfect! Although I doubt I would get myself to leave…
If there was a daycare at Whole Foods, I’d find a way to stay a few hours for sure!
