Wordless Wednesday: Goodbye Kids Plates, Hello White Dishes

I recently made a trip to IKEA and stocked up on white dishes. I wanted to replace our old multi-colored plastic kids dishes with all white dishes. My older kids are 5 and 7 years old and should be perfectly fine using regular dishes now. They do it at school and have no problem.

So I got rid of all this (I kept a couple of small bowls and sippy cups for the baby)…

And now my cupboard of dishes looks like this…

I finally feel like I have a grown-up kitchen and I have a smile on my face every time I serve up food on a white dish to my kids.

Once I can get rid of all bottles and sippy cups, I’ll be doing a happy dance.

  1. Don’t let John see this blog post! He has been advocating for this and the kids and I are not ready! I don’t want to deal with them dropping and breaking the real stuff and they like to pick the color of their plate, etc. Have to admit your cupboard looks nice and tidy though!

  2. Yay! It feels so good to get rid of all that plastic stuff, doesn’t it? My kids used to knock over their cups practically every day. Once we switched to glass cups, it stopped immediately.

  3. I never lost a “real” plate to a kid breaking it. I think the weight prevents them from tipping/flipping it over easily. If anything, I’m the one who broke the dishes (only lost 1 plate and 1 bowl out of my place setting for 8 that I’ve had for 9 years). The kids are good about using real mugs and glasses and are more responsible with their placement and how they hold them. I only use the little plastic bowls for carry-around snacks since they have lids.

Hooray for the grown up kitchen! :)

  4. My cupboard is filled with mostly white dishes now, but we have a special section that is growing and it has the unbreakables for toddlers. I’m going to have to limit that section!
