A Week of Firsts in Hawaii

Our crab and lobster aquarium.

After a few stressful days at the beginning of our Hawaii trip, I’m happy to report that thing are going much better. We absolutely love our new rental. We were lucky to secure a vacation rental just steps away from the beach but with it’s own jacuzzi and a shared pool. If you’ve got kids, a pool and jacuzzi provide easy entertainment on vacation. There have been days that my kids haven’t even left our rental. They’ve just been having a ball swimming and visiting the beach nearby.

This week my boys have experienced a handful of firsts, including:

  1. Staying up past midnight for New Year’s Eve
  2. Snorkeling
  3. Surfing tandem with my husband
  4. Catching hermit crabs and a baby lobster
  5. Seeing vana (see urchin) in the ocean
  6. Swimming in the deep end in the pool

Catching crabs

My 7 year old son has been having a great time playing scientist and observing marine life. While catching crabs on the beach, one of the crabs ran after him. It was hilarious watching my son run away from a 2-inch crab. My son even made a crab for his arts and crafts time today.

Right now we have a little sea life mini aquarium in our backyard. The boys are going to release all their marine animals back into the ocean tomorrow.
