To Gift Card or Not to Gift Card

With Christmas just a week away, I’m finding that I’m loading up on gift cards to give to family. My nephews are getting iTunes gift cards. My sisters are getting Pier One gift cards. My kids’ teachers got Target gift cards. Pretty much everyone in the family are getting gift cards except my kids. They’re getting the only wrapped presents on my shopping list.

I love gift cards myself because I can get what I want. I encourage others to give me gift cards. Truthfully, I think the only person who may really know what I want is my husband – and I like to take the pressure off him by telling him to either give me a gift card or better yet just let me get my own present.

I know some people are are emphatically against gift cards. They tell me there’s no thought in giving a gift card. I disagree. I put thought into the store the gift card can be redeemed at. Plus, I do feel like the holidays can be just about gift giving as opposed to finding the right gift. I mean if I saw something that I know someone would truly like I’d get it.

But everyone else… gift cards.

Do you give gift cards? Or are you against them?

  1. I’ve been giving bookstore gift cards to our teachers for years. I think they really appreciate it!
